Defining Endometriosis

Dr. Stoelk, a reproductive endocrinologist and reproductive surgeon is one of the leading experts at diagnosing and treating endometriosis both for infertility patients and those in severe pain.

Endometriosis is a condition where the normal lining tissue inside the uterus (endometrium) is also present outside the uterus, implanted on other pelvic organs. Because this abnormally placed tissue is no longer in the uterus, monthly bleeding is unable to escape from the body. This causes inflammation of surrounding tissue. These inflammatory cells are destructive to the woman’s egg after release from the ovary and to sperm, which may be trying to fertilize the egg. Thus, the result is a hostile environment that prevents fertilization and produces infertility.

Symptoms of endometriosis can vary greatly, but the inflammation most often produces pain, especially severe menstrual cramping, pain deep inside during intercourse, painful ovulation and more. With a few pointed questions and an exam, Dr. Stoelk often reveals intestinal problems that have been mistakenly labeled “irritable bowel syndrome.” Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), especially premenstrual abdominal bloating is often caused by endometriosis.

How do you know if you have endometriosis? While endometriosis can be suspected because of these symptoms or infertility, the definitive diagnosis can only be made by laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is outpatient surgery where a thin scope is inserted through the navel so the pelvic organs can be viewed. It is critical that this laparoscopy be performed by a true endometriosis specialist like Dr. Stoelk because so many of the endometriosis lesions are very subtle in appearance. With true expertise, the lesions can be identified and removed.

We can alleviate the pain and frustration. Dr. Stoelk has developed a very high degree of expertise in diagnosing and treating endometriosis, both for both infertility and pain. He was one of the earliest laparoscopic experts to treat by laser vaporization and has successfully treated thousands of women over the past 20 years. Dr. Stoelk believes this method is far superior to any other treatment method, such as cauterizing, excision or medications. The length of surgery is somewhat longer, but he years of relief are well worth it. There’s truly no substitute for experience in properly treating this problematic disease.
